AboutThis is a community started to recruit, plan and organize volunteers for the Heinlein Society blood drive at the 2006 Arisia Convention in Boston.
The Heinlein Society runs bloods drives at science fiction conventions, this was started by Heinlein himself.
So, a community is born. Hot chicks in Nurse outfits = lots of fun and attention for the blood drive!!
Of course, we don't want to discriminate so yes, boys can be Naughty Nurses too!!!
While it's a blast, there is an amount of "work" (and I use the term loosely) involved. So, to do this, you have to be willing to:
-dress up as a Naughty Nurse. Wear the sexiest nurse costume you can legally wear in public.
-party hop on Friday night and tell people about the blood drive.
-man the doors of Friday night events and tell people about the blood drive.
-get up on stage before the Rocky Horror Show at midnight Friday and do a little skit-type thing
-spend some time (I'd like it to be at least one hour) on Saturday manning the Heinlein Society table. You stand there, look sexy, tell people about the drive and where to go to donate, and hand out Hershey's Kisses and Hugs.
-get your picture taken. A lot. Especially around Storm Troopers.
-bestow donors with a pin (designed by Heinlein) after they've donated and if you are adventurous, bestow them with real kisses and hugs as well.
-walk around the con, especially the main mezzanine, telling people about the drive.
That's it! You don't have to give blood or join the Heinlein Society or anything.
Because giving blood is not a lightly asked thing, don't feel like you have to walk up to strangers and pressure them. No, that is actually discouraged. Those folks who feel that they want/can give will do so. Just getting the word out on how to give and that it's happening is enough. And believe me, just vamping out and smiling in a Naughty Nurse oufit...plenty of folks will come up to you.
You also don't have to spend the entire con being a Naughty Nurse. Just give the time you can, an hour or two on Friday and Saturday is all. (I think the person who spread the word the most last year was the Naughty Nurse who just went about her regular con activities in her Nurse outfit!) But being willing to spend an hour at the table on Saturday would really be helpful.
There are many people who disagree with the Red Cross's strict rules on who can donate. There are many great arguments on all sides of this issue, we don't wanna get into that at all. In short, giving blood is A Good Thing. At the Arisia con, we have the option of doing that through the Red Cross and MGH so that's what we do. Don't feel you have to get involved in any discussion you don't want to about it. Please don't debate about it in this community either.
So just, make a post if you are interested and more details will follow as the con nears.
